Artist Interview: Alyssa Whetstone
As artists, we seek out other artists whose styles, techniques, and mediums we can relate to. Alyssa Whetstone is an artist who works with the same primary mediums I have been exploring in my most recent art: watercolor and pen. She is a Minnesota-based artist and teacher who creates beautiful watercolor paintings of places and objects she connects with. She focuses on realism with her own creative touch, drawing viewers in through her illustrative eye. Her continual series of Minnesota-based prints is a way to create shared experiences and memories between the artist and the viewers of the local places we are all familiar with. Alyssa’s subdued natural color palette adds to the nostalgic feelings that surface while viewing her art.
In a society that keeps drifting farther apart due to technology, Alyssa’s work brings a connectedness to our little land of 10,000 lakes. As a local artist, she is helping community members rediscover their love of Minnesota, finding the beauty of the places around us that we often overlook. She is also drawing attention to the medium of watercolor - a painting medium often forgotten about after elementary school. Alyssa has started teaching watercolor courses and selling watercolor workbooks that people of all ages have been rekindling their passion for the medium with.
